Lotus Elise - Performance Through Light Weight Colin Chapman CBE was born 19th May 1928 he was an influential British designer, inventor and builder in the automotive industry. He studied structural engineering at University College London and joined the University Air Squadron and learned to fly. He briefly joined the Royal Air Force but in 1948 he decided to pursue his passion in civil engineering. Initially trying to sell his belief that aluminium was a viable structural material for the construction of buildings. During this period this funded his true passion for light weight sports and racing cars. Chapman initially ran Lotus is his spare time assisted by a group of enthusiasts but in 1952 he founded the sports car company Lotus Cars. His knowledge gained on the latest aeronautical engineering techniques would prove vital towards achieving the major automotive and technical advances he is remembered for. Under his direction Team Lotus won seven Formula One Constructors titles and six Drivers Championships in the period up to 1978. This helped fund the production side of Lotus which since the early 60’s has build tens of thousands of affordable cutting edge cars that follow the original mantra that Colin Chapmans ethos for Lotus Cars was based on: "Performance Through Light Weight"
This blog details my mission to develop a performance focused car that is far superior in 0-60mph to other production cars with fantastic Dynamics based on a proven platform. The car must be capable of giving supercars in a much higher price range a good run yet still maintain daily drivability and reasonable economy following Colin Chapman’s original concepts.
